As we enter Yom Kippur, we prepare to take on the tasks of atonement, to engage in personal and public reflection on how we have wronged and how we repair.

An ancient Jewish legend tells of the shards of the original primordial light that are scattered all over earth. Each kind gesture of ours, each will to heal, to care for, to change, and every conscious moment of intention, lifts up a broken shard to rebuild a better world, together. That is the ongoing labor of love, not always easy, called Tikkun.

Here’s a list of 40 tools that our community came up with, a tapestry of tips and teachings, shards we lift to hold the whole and return to repair, together:

I choose “Presence” as my Tikkun moment. My inspiration is Fred Rogers. For many adults and children alike his daily presence offered comfort, entertainment and deep understanding. I especially value his thoughts on helping. I believe that to be a helper you have to be fully present in the moment. And to be the recipient means you are able to recognize or at least accept the help. It comes in many forms and anyone can help – regardless of age. There is a beautiful reciprocity to the act of offering aid and comfort to another person.

Dina Rose Friedman (she/her) is a lifelong educator who turned her deep desire to help young people navigate their world into a later in life career as an early childhood educator. She credits Fred Roger for her love and skill in using songs and puppets in her work with children.

This awakens their Neshama/Original True Nature, and so is a potent medicine.

So often when we are engaged in repair, we feel hurt or harmed and also learn that we have participated in the hurting or harming of another. The emotional vulnerability required of us in order to truly engage in the repair process, is enough to make the amygdalae of even the most steady among us rage and flail. So we endeavor to stretch. We must venture from our comfort zones, where we get to vent or defend ourselves for hours. If we are thrust into the panic zone, we freeze or fight and are not good for much. But, if we can grow our tolerance for the stretch zone, as my dear friend and co-conspirator, Dr. Imani Chapman says, "That is where the magic happens."

franny silverman (she/her), Lab/Shul board co-chair, is a consultant, coach and creator, with over 25 years of experience supporting institutional stakeholders at every level through significant changes to move the organizations they care about towards greater equity and mission alignment. As a practitioner of transformative mediation and restorative justice practices, franny supports people to move through conflict and charged differences with bravery, compassion, and accountability. Drawing on her background in ritual and devised theater, she creates and officiates tailor-made life-cycle rituals marking time and life moments. franny’s work is anchored by an active antiracist practice as a white Ashkenazi Jew, her dedication to the health and wellness of Jewish diasporic communities, and her commitment to building a world where all people have what they need to thrive as their whole selves in community.

When someone is hurting, I strive to listen to them. To love them. To support them to turn toward their people and feel the healing that resounds from belonging.

But when my self-hating depression screeches inside me? That I am nothing. A failure. An undeserving ________! I beam a smile and sing to everyone (and myself) that I am allllllllll gooooooooooood!?!?!?!

My tool of Tikkun is to emerge from hiding. Lean into life the way that I invite others to do so. I admit, I don't know what that feels like yet. But I am just. Maybe. Beginning to sense the possibilities.

Movements need to build critical mass to succeed—but how open can a tent be before it lets in the elements? I think this quote gives us a good place to work from: if we can mutually recognize each other’s humanity, we have the basis for a working relationship. We don’t have to like our neighbors; we just have to love them.

I'm a facilitator. I feel most professionally at home guiding a group through a process of coming to know itself and taking on the work it was convened for. In facilitation, conflict, well stewarded, is often root of deeper intimacy and change — but it takes courage to name the conflict as it's arising, and to invite the group to turn toward it rather than away. In conflict we can ask each other genuinely: what's at stake for you? Why are you still here? What about you don't I know yet? What about me don't you? Conflict is very painful. When I'm not wearing my professional hat I avoid it constantly. But working as a facilitator gives me an opportunity to practice managing the discomfort long enough to see what deeper truth is there. And repair can only begin from an honest investigation of the truth.

Ben Freeman (he/him) is a multidisciplinary artist, educator/facilitator, and spiritual leader based in Brooklyn. At Lab/Shul, he is the Program Director of Pass/Age and GENerate and a ritual leader.

Yoko Ono's idea to use the cassette tape ribbon to wrap gifts in the sound of falling snow reminds me that beauty should be shared. And that the world can be repaired through the sharing of beauty, like combatants pausing their fight to watch the sun set. May the beauty help them forget to pick their weapons back up.

Our very first Matriarch, Sarah, let out a good ol’ belly laugh when Havaya came to her and said, “next time I see you, you’ll have a child.” Yeah right, good one, Hashem. Or shall I say, ‘Ha Hashem.’ Under that laugh was surely the pain of so many years of trying to become a mother. When the Prophecy shockingly came true, Sarah aptly named her son Issac—He will Laugh. If Torah is instruction for life, then his naming was one of our very first ones. Humor is a tool to endure all the slings and arrows of our collective outrageous fortunes.

From the beginning of recorded history, those in power have "othered" those they wished to attack and dominate, often using claims of religious supremacy. The Torah's statement, so early on in the text, that all humans are created b'tzelem elohim, in the image of the Divine, is a radical rejection of this. It implies that every human is, as Rabbi Yitz Greenberg has put it, "endowed by their Creator with three inalienable dignities...infinite value, equality and uniqueness." I strive to keep this in mind in any efforts I am making to better the world. For instance, I can hand money to an unhoused person as I pass by which is an act of tikkun. But if I can pause, look them in the eye, offer kind words--to recognize our shared divine humanity if just for a moment, then I have perhaps helped in a different way.

Todd Brecher (he/him) is the Treasurer of Lab/Shul and a Jewish professional who is passionate about innovative models of making the treasure trove of Jewish wisdom more accessible and engaging to Jews and spiritual seekers of all kinds. Todd serves as the Director of Operations and Strategy of Judaism Unbound, an expansive and radically inclusive digital-first Jewish organization for people who want to discover innovative Jewish ideas, practices, and communities, or who want to engage in a quest to find their own unique philosophies of Judaism and paths to living a Jewish life. He is also the Finance and Operations Manager for Recustom, a platform designed to create, adapt, and explore Jewish rituals from timeless traditions and beyond. I chose this quote because it speakes to the courage it takes to stand up for truth without compromising love, no matter how painful and tragic other peoples' words and actions may be. This practice of Nonviolence (Satyagraha) invites me to rely on faith and trust in our shared humanity and in life itself, knowing that the only path to sustainable peace (Tikkun Olam) is one that cares for everyone's needs, including those whose actions I may choose to resist.

Aya Caspi (she/her) is a Certified Trainer with the Center for Nonviolent Communication. She has been sharing the work of NVC internationally via online classes and in-person retreats and work in settings as varied as schools, parenting, couples counseling, mediation, nonprofit organizations, social change communities, and media.

These days, as things in the world become louder and more chaotic, I find myself leaning into stillness more and more. No matter how crazy the world or my days become, I know that by taking a couple of minutes to breathe and ground myself, I can feel recharged and ready to navigate the world from a better place. Inspired by my yoga and meditation practice, these moments of stillness have allowed me to not only feel better but to also reflect deeply into the ways I can create more love and compassion, giving me the space and permission to allow my heart to open up in ways I didn’t know I still had the capacity for.

So as Ram Dass reminds us, take a moment to get really quiet and see what else you can hear from within yourself and the world around us!

Stephen Silva (he/him) is a latino and queer community-centered educator and non-profit administrator living in Queens with over a decade of experience leading and managing youth development programs serving under-resourced school communities. On top of that, he is a seeker and ritualist who found a spiritual home at Lab/Shul as a community partner in 2019 as he was converting to Judaism from Catholicism. He started off in our community as a Feast Team volunteer helping our virtual ritual spaces with time to schmooze and connect deeply during the pandemic. Now, bringing the wisdom and experiences from both his professional and spiritual worlds, he serves as the Lab/Shul Community Manager, welcoming people into our Partnerhood and helping them find a sense of belonging in our greater community.
