PrePent Day 26
Mycelium
Welcome to PrePent Day 26!
I read once that mycelium is the Earth’s natural internet - Paul Stamets in his book Mycelium Running: How mushrooms can help save the world reasoned that “Because these externalized neurological nets sense any impression upon them, from footsteps to falling tree branches, they could relay enormous amounts of data regarding the movements of all organisms through the landscape.”
Franny Silverman, founding Storahtelling artist, Lab/Shul board member knows that humans who build walls, try and shut down communication or keep us separate are engaging in a futile effort. One might say she is a bit of a mycelium in her work as a coach, consultant, and creator. She’s helping to connect folks in antiracism and racial equity work with organizations and white Jews.
“We are all connected. Because nature understands that implicitly even if across history many humans have tried to deny that truth. By tending to the collective, we all can thrive. The fungus and the trees know this.”
What can we trust to connect us? Her answer: mycelium
In what do YOU trust?
Welcome to the PrePent journey - August 18th - the first day of the month of Elul.
Here’s how you can participate:
Each day, starting today and ending on Yom Kippur, 9/25, we’ll post one photo+short text submitted by YOU - Lab/Shul Partners and global community members. (Double photos on Friday for Shabbat - we won’t post on Saturday.)
Use this printable signEditSignEditSignEditSign to write in your answer, snap a picture, write a short paragraph about your choice, and send it in to us using this form. You can also create your own sign and share with us!
We’ll be posting these daily offerings on our social media and website. You can also subscribe to get them in your inbox, for 40 days.
The entire collection will be on display at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center as an ongoing gallery during the High Holy Days, and attendees will be able to create new versions right on the spot. We’ll be talking about your choices on Yom Kippur - exploring, together, what it means to rebuild trust and re-imagine the sacred.
